Increase in Asian Hate Crimes

Each year that passes, the increase in Asian hate crimes keeps increasing. However, most notably, the most targeted group for the Asian hate crimes are the Chinese, due to the false assumption that they were the ones who had made the coronavirus, when in reality, the origins of the virus are unknown and have stayed unknown for the past two years, due to the false assumptions as well as other people believing that Chinese people were the cause of the coronavirus, many began to start doing Asian hate crimes, believing that everything that had happened so far was all because of the Asians.

Many influential political figures believed that the reason for the coronavirus was because of the Chinese people themselves, going so far as to call the virus the ‘Wuhan Virus’ or even the ‘China Virus,’ an example of this is former president Donald Trump, who made racist remarks towards the Chinese and called it the ‘Kung Flu,’ because of the racist comments made by the many influential political figures as well as many celebrities, the citizens themselves were influenced by them and started to act racist towards many Asians.

Because of this effect, Asian hate crime has increased by 339 percent last year compared to the year before, with New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities surpassing their record numbers in 2020. Given that most Asians do not report hate crimes that were done against them, there is a very real chance that the increase in Asian hate crimes could very well be 500 percent in reality.

Other than Asian hate crimes, Asians also face other sorts of discrimination from other groups, such as verbal harassment and shunning; because of all the types of discrimination that Asians hate, a majority of them may develop things such as PTSD, anxiety, as well as depression, which may cause them to kill themselves as a result.
